The Stork & The Rhinoceros

Say "Hello" to Mr. Stork. I found him in my studio one morning.
He wanted to cross the river one day but was afraid to get his feet wet (silly bird!)
The lily pads were very wobbly!
Fortunately, Miss Rhinoceros, who wasn't afraid of anything, offered to give Mr. Stork a ride across the river.
The water wasn't deep at all! Mr. Stork was just afraid of too many things.
They made it across and the stork thanked Miss Rhinoceros profusely.
Sometimes, depending on the nature of one's friendship, it's easier to just help someone and not make too many observations and comments! Maybe Mr. Stork will find a way to help out Miss Rhinoceros someday.

Room for Waiting

"The Waiting Room"
Oct. 30, 2011
collage, mixed media
detail
A toast then to those moments (or are they only yesterdays?) where we find ourselves possessed of the duty to wait for something that hasn't arrived yet. These moments could be the spaces between words or the spaces between our idea of what our lives are and someone else's idea of what our lives will be.

Who is this "someone?" God? Our future self, or selves? The Fates or the Furies?

Here's a happy fellow. His knapsack is full but not too heavy. He has a companion who sleeps comfortably at his feet. He looks out of the waiting room window. It's an old space with a worn linoleum floor. Perhaps he just had some tea or sake. Or maybe that vase needs to be refreshed.

Inside and Outside don't seem very different; they are just opposite sides of a common wall. So we wait and we not-wait… the two halves of the whole darn thing!

Bonne journée!

A Family Affair

"A Family Affair"

Into this inhospitable place an egg has been laid and all these funny birds have become involved in guarding the egg --which looks like it will be just fine all by itself (at least until the baby hatches!).
Below are a few details.  I made it with painted papers which I collaged and drew into just a little.

I painted this one today (Aug. 9, 2011). I don't know about you but the Dow's drop yesterday and the US debt debacle make me feel a very annoyed at our venerable leaders. Well, there's always Art and, groan, Religion!

The Very Tiny Dragon

This pencil and collage illustration is from my sketchbook: April 22, 2011
Once upon a time there was a dragon the size of an beetle! He lived in and loved a toy castle made from carefully folded candy wrappers in the Librarie Polonaise on Boulevard St Germain. One day, a rich tourist saw the castle and wanted to buy it. The shopkeeper refused because the castle was priceless. The dragon repaid him by guarding the candy wrapper castles and the rare books from the mice who lived in the walls of the old building. In the cold Parisian winter, visitors often remarked on how warm the shop was and how radiant the castle looked. There was not a speck of dust and a Chopin Impromptu could sometimes be heard coming from a tiny upstairs room! The End.
