Seasonal thoughts

"We have lived enough for others; let us at least live out the small remnant of life for ourselves; let us now call in our thoughts and intentions to ourselves, and to our own ease and repose. 'Tis no light thing to make a sure retreat; it will be enough for us to do without mixing other enterprises. Since God gives us leisure to order our removal, let us make ready, truss our baggage, take leave betimes of the company, and disentangle ourselves from those violent importunities that engage us elsewhere and separate us from ourselves."

Bateau à vapeur

after Manet
11-17-14a
ink, acrylic, watercolor

my sketch after a painting by Édouard Manet in Chicago (below)
I like this painting for it's directness and carefree, crude rendering of the water, smoke and boats. Yet there is also a fabulous sense of space, and with the arrangement of the boats, a sense of a brief passage of time.

Church Doodles

My wife and I attend church regularly and I've been involved in many committees and boards at our church. But when I sit in that pew on Sunday mornings with all the music, prayers, sermons and fellowship, I doodle in my program. I look forward to the time I spend in that pew: just me and God: two creative blokes…
God hasn't outsmarted me and broken my pencil leads yet so until she does, I'll keep doodling. It's my way of being the best Rob there ever was — which I think is the point of the whole exercise anyway!
