The Advice Columnist

Take a generous helping of Chaos (This is Life)…

Add your thoughts, daydreams, all you've learned…

And try to stay upright and balanced…

With the full awareness of the meaninglessness of it all.

Salut!

Two Silly Birds

Aug. 21, 2012
"Two young cormorants"
Just a little thing from my sketchbook the other day.
I believe one bird is having a little chat with a fish (which I didn't draw) under the water. He's just extending an invitation… for lunch perhaps. But he's a young bird, maybe he is only interested in the social aspects of a shared meal. The fish, an obedient and conservative creature by nature, is sure to ask his parents first. Stay tuned!

Goony Birds

Here are more doodles of morose storks (or herons, crows or cormorants --or a combination of all of them!)
Why are they so depressed, anxious and worried? I don't know. They don't answer their email!
Is he looking for something or does he think we can't see him?
He wishes he brought a book

doing nothing and he looks guilty. Why do I suddenly feel implicated too?
Brilliant!

waiting for something to come out… out of what??!

could be body surfing?

Always Vigilant

"He's guarding his stuff"
© 2012 Rob Dunlavey
graphite
Unless someone takes pity on this fearful creature, he will starve up there all alone on his precious pile of bags and baggage. What could be so valuable?
Details below:

The whole sketchbook page has writing and another sketch on it.

Romeo & Juliet

A small flock of beautiful swans swimming in a pond. A black coot swims nearby but they ignore each other
A young heron gazes from the rocky shore and sees a vision of pure white loveliness.
The first tentative steps
More steps of a different, less-tentative manner

Ahh… the Birds and the Bees!

The Small Cricket's Tall Tale

September: this is the time of year when crickets try to outdo each other telling stories of dubious validity. This little fellow: Napoleon is his name, is the loudest in the barnyard. Why is he singing from the top an old pile of cow dung when he used to sing at La Scala with the great Maria Callas? C'mon Monsieur Napoleon, we are all ears!

Herons and Cormorants and Birds, Oh My!

I doodled these birds last night while watching the Red Sox play Texas. Go Sox!

reminds me of Hitchcock's "The Birds"…

But these guys are harmless

They are just drawings! Do not be afraid.

But they are easily annoyed!

Naturally, I was thinking of the cormorants I see at the lake

Easily annoyed… AND vain!

And all too human!

Getting Focused

There's a theme here, no?
Yes, here we are back at the dam on the Charles River a few minutes walk from my home. Two months ago, it was a raging torrent and me and my dear sketchbook would have been rudely swept out to Boston Harbor and the icy gray Atlantic Ocean beyond. But this day the water was well-behaved and it sparkled in the early morning sun.

Fisherman wade up and down here and catch things. Fathers and sons practice the ancient art. I used to fish with my daughter here and other nearby places. She was quite eager and ardent about it. Of course, I had the unenviable job of "preparing" the worms, impaling them on the hook and, if we got lucky, removing the hapless fish from the hook and tossing it back in (where it often jumped back on the hook!).

What I fish for is less problematic and messy:

Here are a few other pages from this sketchbook:

The thing with the bottle caps is my mbira. It was made by Newton Gwara in Zimbabwe and was given to me by my friend Solomon Murungu who is a very good mbira player. It makes beautiful music that seems to go with the rushing rippling river. Maybe I have an example somewhere for you: "Walk On By" [mp3 file]. This is my own lame little song; listen to Solomon's cd if you desire the real thing (and you should!)

I blogged about this heron previously. I like his style of fishing: slow and graceful, highly evolved and a bit comical. I've never  seen an overweight heron; have you? I guess they eat pretty well.
